The Regulations
The Electricity at Work regulations 1989 requires electrical appliances and systems to be maintained to prevent the risk of accidents. Recommendations in The Health and Safety Executive Memorandum of Guidance HS(R)25 state that maintenance should be based on a regime of regular inspection and testing by a competent person.

Testing is carried out using PAT testing equipment, this ensures that portable appliances are checked by trained engineers to ensure they comply with the standard and are safe to use.
A detailed report is then compiled listing the status of each appliance, ensuring it is safe for the purpose for which it was designed.
